PAEONIACEAE(Peony family)
Thirty six species in one genus are found in northern temperate regions. The family is related to Ranunculaceae. [Summary yet to be added] Schwartz et al. (1957) included paeonies in general (Paeonia spp.) in a list of plants that might irritate the skin of florists, gardeners, and field labourers, probably only on the basis of their botanical classification in the Ranunculaceae at that time. In traditional Chinese medicine, the root of this species is the source of bai shao (白芍) or bai shao yao (白芍药), otherwise known as Radix Paeoniae Lactiflorae or Radix Paeoniae Alba (see the online 中藥詞典 Chinese Herb Dictionary 2013 and Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2015).
